Acoustic imaging is excellent for materials studies, because many of the physical properties of materials are directly related to the acoustic properties. This image of a piece of 0.004 inch thick mylar is a good example. 'Gel spots' in mylar, areas where the physical properties are notably different, are a concern. Normally, they can only be found indirectly, by inspecting for film stresses adjacent to the gel spots. However, because the physical properties of the gel spots differ from the rest of the mylar, the acoustic properties differ as well, and they can easily be detected by the C-SAM acoustic microscope. The gel spots in this image, the gray ovals in the center, are both approximately 0.030 inches in the longest dimension.
